frustration. Calling all geeks! HELP!!!

I have a 40gb external hard drive that doesn't work anymore. Before it stopped working I managed to backup the files to the 500gb and thought the files were safe.
Today my mac was complaining again of lack of storage space so I thought "Well it's time to backup everything and delete from the disk". Half way through the backup, the 500gb disk died.
Well it didn't die as in "rigor mortis" death. It still makes noises but doesn't work anymore.
I think my Maxtor 500gb hard drive is in a coma. Brain-dead. Kaput. Finito. Acabado.
Fortunately I didn't delete anything from the internal drive yet but I'm afraid I lost lots of stuff I don't have anywhere else.
And for the record, yes I've tried turning it off and on again, the same goes for the computer. Several times!
I changed the cable, I tried every usb port available. I don't know what-else to do.
Will anyone help me please?
I'm on MacOS X 10.4.11 and the disc has been working fine since I bought it 8 or 9 months ago.

the recipe in portuguese

Pronto suas gulosas. Cá vai.

massa de choux:

150g de farinha
100g de manteiga
4 ovos batidos
300ml de água

Aqueça o forno a 220ºC/7.

Profiteroles' Goddess!

and very modest too.

Yesterday I had baking fever so I went to Tesco and bought some flour and stuff.
My friends gave me once a recipe book called "Sobremesas Perigosas" or in english "dangerous desserts" and as I had nothing better to do, I decided to try making some Profiteroles.
It's the EASIEST thing to do.
too easy!
I did it all from scratch. even the dough.

I went to Camden Barfly again this time to shoot Sons of Albion.
Great gig but unfortunately the venue wasn't full and the lighting was a bit weird.

Richmond

Last weekend, I was browsing through the Jessops website and on the "clearance" section I found the best bargain of my life: a fine Sigma flash for 20 quid!!. "Well, i though, i must get this one!"
On the specs page (Sigma website) it said it was compatible with my camera so I went to Richmond to get it.
When I got there, it was only compatible with Sigma cameras.
:/

Anyway, on the way to meet Zé - a Richmond local :D, I shot this pic:

and then we went for a walk by the Thames.
